My blog’s purpose is to share my AHA! moments with God—those instances when the scales fall from my eyes, and the Holy Spirit says, “Now you’ve got it!” Sometimes that AHA! is a monumental revelation. Sometimes it’s a facepalm, “I can’t believe I’ve missed this” moment.
Recently, I had a facepalm AHA! One of the key points during Bible Study was that I must feast on God’s Word daily. The teacher then expounded with “give us this day our daily bread” from the Lord’s Prayer. Hearing this caused my synapses to fire; a revelation was forming, but it was not yet crystallized. The next morning, after reviewing my Bible study notes, I opened the Our Daily Bread app. Voila, I had a “how could I have missed this” moment.
Our Daily Bread
The Our Daily Bread Ministries website is my go-to for daily devotionals (when I’m not writing my own 😊). When I power up my computer, this website, along with Bible Gateway, is my first order of business. I have the app’s icon on my phone’s home screen; I can quickly access the devotions even when traveling. It is the place for my daily inspiration. However, the significance of the website’s name escaped me. But on that AHA! day, the scales fell away. The link between the Lord’s Prayer, the Bible Study lesson, and Our Daily Bread became clear. Let’s explore our daily bread.
Supplication
We are taught to recite the Lord’s Prayer at an early age, but we aren’t always taught what the words mean. Until my AHA!, I interpreted “give us this day our daily bread” literally. It was a request for God to care and provide for my needs (see My Lord’s Prayer). Using the ACTS[1] prescription of praying, this part of the Lord’s Prayer equated to the S-supplication. While it very well may be, the question becomes “what is the daily bread we are asking for?”
Bread = God’s Word
AHA!—Our daily bread is God’s Word. When we supplicate ourselves with “give us this day our daily bread,” we ask not only for our needs to be met, but also for our spiritual growth. We are asking God to fuel us with his word.
Receiving Our Daily Bread
How do we receive daily bread? We commune with God daily. We listen. We pray. We meditate. We read. We wait. We learn and discuss with like-minded souls. We are receptive to his calling. We draw near to him with clean hands and a pure heart (James 4:8). In other words, we go to God contritely, humbly, and ask him to fuel us with his word…his will…his calling…his light…his direction.
Using Our Daily Bread
What is the purpose of God fueling us with our daily bread? Just as we fuel our vehicles so that they will drive, asking God for our daily bread should motivate us to move purposefully for him. We don’t put gas or electricity in our cars so that they sit idly (at least I don’t). Neither should God’s word go idle in us. God fuels us for his purpose. The Bible is replete with scriptures describing God’s expectations of us. Romans 12 provides an excellent description of how we can use God’s Word in our daily lives.
Prayer
Give us this day our daily bread. Those seven words are our supplication to God to feed us.
“Lord, give me this day my daily bread. Please nourish me with your wisdom. Enlighten me with your knowledge. Fill me with your love. But more than that, Lord, let the daily bread you feed me propel me to live a life worthy of the sacrifice of your Son. Amen.”
