In My Present

The verse of the day was Psalm 25:14-15. I kinda knew the context but decided to read the entire chapter for certainty. Verse 1 stopped me: “To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.”

Authorship of Psalm 25 is attributed to David who presumably wrote this song of deliverance and guidance during one of his periods of exile. Think about it. He is in hiding from his enemies and he sends up this plaintive cry. In his distress, he sang nine words which I have interpreted as, “I have nowhere else to turn but to you O Lord. My enemies pursue me, curse me, besiege me. Here I am Lord. I offer all, nay I surrender all, to you.”

But when I read Psalm 25:1, I was not in the same mental state as David. I was feeling content and blissful; yet this verse halted me. In my present state, this verse said, “I am grateful for the blessings you’ve bestowed on me, O Lord. You have provided opportunities to enjoy this life you’ve given me. Here I am Lord. I offer all to you in gratitude.”

I propose that Psalm 25:1 can be used by each of us in our present situation:

  • In grief: “My heart is broken, O Lord. Grief overwhelms me like a flood. Here I am Lord. I offer all to you in my sorrow.”
  • In fear: “I have allowed false evidence to appear real, O Lord. I am unable to move. Here I am Lord. I offer all to you in surrender.”
  • In uncertainty: “I am not sure what tomorrow will bring, O Lord. The unpredictability of life has stymied me. Here I am Lord. I offer all to you with trust.”
  • In awe: “Your magnificence surrounds me, O Lord. I am humbled by your glorious works. Here I am Lord. I offer all to you in reverence.”

Reflection: How can you use Psalm 25:1 in your present?

(Thanks to Catina for inspiring the addition of “in uncertainty.”)
