Protesting the Attack on DEI

I heard a sermon entitled “The DEI of Grace” by Rev. John-Wesley Howard of Alfred Street Baptist Church, Alexandria, VA (February 16, 2025). It was based on God’s choosing David as the next king (1 Samuel 16:6-13). As the prophet Samuel surveyed the sons of Jesse, God rejected them all. The one God wanted, David, was not at the table; he was in the field tending sheep. Samuel refused to continue until ALL had been brought to the table. (I invite you to read the story in its entirety and go to the church’s website to listen to that sermon.)

As we look at, experience, dread the changes occurring in our nation, we ask ourselves, “What can I do?” Standing in solidarity with one another is a simple, yet powerful action each of us can do. I would like to share two actions you can take to protest the attack on DEI and show solidarity against corporations who choose to exclude a great portion of this country’s citizenry.

  1. Friday, February 28: No shopping Friday. That means no shopping at all – online or in-person. No grocery shopping. No clothes shopping. No gas purchase. No cosmetics or healthcare shopping. No hardware shopping. No travel purchases. NO SHOPPING. Plan and prepare accordingly.
  2. Monday, March 3 – Easter (Lent): TARGET Fast. After years of investing in DEI and showing a positive impact on their bottom line because of it, Target has rolled back its DEI programs. Many Christians participate in a 40-day fast during Lent. Although the Lenten season begins March 5, 2025, you are asked to begin this fast from Target on Monday, March 3. No shopping in Target stores or Target’s online site. If you own Target stock, consider divesting yourself of it. Visit targetfast.org for more information.

Just as the Montgomery bus boycott proved the power of Black citizens who come together with a purpose, these financial boycotts are designed to show the economic impact we and our allies have. Let your green dollars be your voice.

As I state in my blogs, I encourage you to do your own research to verify and confirm. You can do a Google search for more information on both these initiatives. Please share these initiatives with your communities.

I pray peace and blessings on each of you.
