God Is. This gospel anthem was written by Dr. Robert J. Fryson in 1976. The Rev. James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir popularized God Is in 1979.
In this anthem, we have Dr. Fryson’s personal testimony. God is his joy and strength. God is his way-maker and comforter. God is his faithful and trustworthy companion. Dr. Fryson also outlined what he must do to remain in God’s care. The refrain ends with the summary “God is my all and all.”
When we listen and sing this great gospel hymn, we share and agree with Dr. Fryson’s testimony. But I ask you, who and what is God to you?
Imagine expressing your testimony with the opening “God is.” How would you complete that statement? God is what in your life? How has God been present for you? What do you include in that “all and all” summary?
Reflection and Challenge
In your journal, on a piece of paper, on your laptop, in the comment section below, testify who God is to you. Take that opening, GOD IS, and make it personal for your life. More importantly, make it specific and detailed. How is God your all and all? Write your own anthem to God.
